As you advance in skill and knowledge you will be operating aircraft with more complex systems and higher performance than the training aircraft you have been flying so far. As an addition to your Private Pilot License you can earn High Performance and Complex Endorsements which will allow you to excercise the privileges of Pilot in Command on aircraft that are either High Performance or Complex, or both.
High Performance Endorsement
Complex aircraft is defined as an aircraft that has movable flaps, an adjustable, constant speed propeller, and retractable landing gear. The endorsement, also depending on proficiency, includes 1-2 hours of ground instruction on advanced systems management (hydraulic, pneumatic, fuel, etc.), checklist usage, aircraft performance and air/ground handling. The flight usually includes several emergency procedures involving system failures, speed management, precision handling, engine/systems management and competency in handling complex aircraft. Most often a High Performance aircraft qualifies also as a complex aircraft.
Our training aircraft, the Cessna R182, is both complex and high performance. With the available 235 hp and retractable gear it allows us to combine the endorsements into one training session. The training session, depending on proficiency, can be accomplished within 2-3 hours ground instruction and 1-2 hours of flight training. Note that insurance minimums may require more experience in the aircraft type for aircraft rental.
